What can you do

Sharing seva

I have this frame in my office stating the words above:  yoga, seva, write, and travel. My co-worker yesterday popped into my office and asked “what’s seva?” I answered, “in yoga and Sanskrit it means serving others .” The act of selfless service.

I have this on my wall to serve as a reminder of what to focus on. A four word mantra .

Many times I feel that seva has to be something outstanding such as striving to volunteer in an underserved community in a struggling nation like the Philippines  , working in a low paying non profit job with the homeless in the Bronx , or assisting foster kids in Compton. I have done all of these things , but oddly what I think may bring joy on more frequently  is these gratitude cards.

It’s the small acts done consistently that make us, not the over the top short term events . How can we make seva part of our daily practice ? Just like brushing our teeth , mindfulness, or exercise?

Start small. Perhaps opening the door for someone. Smiling at a stranger. Letting someone go ahead of you in a grocery store line. Saying thank you while looking into someone’s eyes sincerely.

All kindness acts are welcome .

“I slept and I dreamed that life is all joy. I woke and I saw that life is all service. I served and I saw that service is joy.”-Khalil Gibran

Compliments are contagious (even in a classroom)

Teachers have such an opportunity to demonstrate to their students the power of praise and kindness

Spa days

Since I have moved to Europe, one thing I have grown to appreciate is spas. It’s not the regular American spa that I embrace , filled with a massage and facial in an office setting  (although those are available).

But there’s a different concept in other cultures . There are  Hammams throughout Turkey, Morocco, and Spain I have explored . I also have peaked into the spas in the German town of Baden Baden , lavishly filled with sun lamps , lavender scented rooms , and even activities such as water zumba.

Spas have the potential in some countries to be part of our weekly lives.  The setting may look luxurious, but it’s not saved for rare moments but Everyday life .
How can we care for our bodies as temples in a temple? This picture was actually taken at my gym which used to be a church, the sauna was the old confessional!

When was the last time you have shown your body appreciation and love ? Not shame , frustration , or even dismissal . Love and gratitude .

For a funny look into a Korean spa I went to in LA , watch conan’s visit

The sacrifices of parenthood

I saw this on a friend’s page. What a beautiful commercial. All parents sacrifice so much for their children. And the ad is for met life!

48 days Podcast

There are several podcasts I listen to on a regular basis to remain inspired and passionate about life, entrepreneurship , and passion. One of which is 48 Days to the Work You Love. Each week Coach Dan Miller encourages audience members to live out their dreams in a realistic and strategic way . He answers questions to those who are lost , provides free advice , and shares success stories. Last week , he discussed instances where he and others expressed gratitude and hope towards others .At the end he requested the audience for their stories on gratitude . I never write to podcasters, authors, or celebrities. But I felt encouraged to share the mission of this website : itonlytakesasmile.com

Below see a link to that podcast , listen to my letter read at the last 4 minutes and 10 seconds of the show.

I encourage anyone who needs an ongoing pep talk to take the next step in their career to subscribe to this weekly podcast.

Below is he letter I wrote to Dan:

On a recent podcast you shared instances where you and others continue to give back to others not just during the holiday season but throughout the year. I find this is so vital and always want to show others the depth of my gratitude .

Four years ago i started the process of handing out gratitude cards to those who serve me: bank tellers , waiters, baristas , family, and friends. These cards generally have a positive quote and funny picture, of my dogs on them with a link to a website of mine: Itonlytakeaasmile.com. The site is filled with positive stories I write or have found online. We hear so many horrific things on the news , and not enough positivity. Just as negativity is contagious , so is optimism.

Initially I was extremely intent on giving this to everyone I encountered . It’s decreased through the years, and has remained primarily active when I travel. I especially try to give it to those who deal with the daily grind of disgruntled travellers at the airports .

I have been lucky enough to have my dream job overseas the past several years as a psychologist and yoga instructor serving the military. There could be a chance the dream ends as contracts change, and so I continue to listen to your show weekly for tips, as you guide others through their struggles.

Thank you for all you do in keeping people’s spirits up throughout the year, and fueling them to live out their passions. It serves as a reminder for me to keep up my positivity blog and handing out gratitude cards to others. I hope to attend one of your workshops in the future , as I eventually shift into the next phase of my life.

With gratitude and love ,

A Christmas Jumper

The Brits love Christmas jumpers (aka sweaters).  As Americans we love an ugly xmas sweater party . But here it’s not ugly, just celebratory.  It’s something I truly appreciate, the British love for being in the festive season.

I have lived here for over 3 1/2 years and have now accumulated over 6 holiday jumpers. It’s quite addicting , if I could I would buy my entire family a xmas sweater as a gift. But I’m not sure they would appreciate it.

Although these two photos are a bit cheeky, they get people to smile. To combine 50 Cent and Jesus in a festive sweater is brilliant.

Next Friday Dec 16 is National xmas jumper day.  Money goes to helping children in need. Wear a jumper , raise money, and bring a smile to those who spot you!

One life live it

In October my husband and I took a quick trip to Sardinia to explore the land and sea. One excursion we jumped on was a beach/partial off road tour of the southeastern side of the island. The off road part was definitely scary, as demonstrated in the video below .

But it was the best part. The drive was anti-climatic. There was such an adrenaline high on this piece of the drive with the  cliffs overlooking the cleanest blue waters . But we didn’t visit that beach, simply a secluded beach with a lacklustre view. If we didn’t take have this scary portion of the journey, it would have been quite boring .

So many times fear keeps us from doing what our hearts desire.  Push yourselves to live outside your boundaries.

Strap on your seat belts and enjoy the bumpy ride.  Be bold , you have one life , live it!
